Doctor Who #13

The new doctor has been revealed and she’s a woman! I couldn’t be more excited about it. I watched the announcement video the moment I saw it on my Facebook feed and looked in anticipation to see who will take over the torch of this iconic character next.

From the moment the hand opened, I gasped, because even though I felt it was woman, my mind told me this couldn’t be true. There were already rumours that they maybe for the first time ever would make the doctor a woman, but I also thought that they wouldn’t do this right now. But oh my god they did, and it’s Jodie Whittaker who will take over the role. She is an amazing actress and has put down an amazing performance in Broadchurch and I can’t wait to see how she’ll give her twist to the Doctor.

Disney’s Aladdin has been cast

D23 has revealed many things this past weekend, next to new poster for the Star Wars movie, the news that came that was most interesting to me, is the casting of the live action movie of Aladdin. I’m a huge fan of the animated movie, and after the successful adaptation of Cinderella and Beauty & The Beast, I’m eagerly waiting to see how they’ll adapt this one.

http://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/movies/a10312219/disney-live-action-aladdin-cast/

News_03

The movie will be directed by Guy Ritchie. Best known for Sherlock Holmes, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and his latest King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, his films are always beautiful action scenes with funny characters that give us a bit of a breather. Will Smith has been previously revealed as Genie. Unfortunately, this is a choice I’m not so happy with. But maybe this is because in my mind Genie will always be Robin Williams. Mena Massoud has been cast as Aladdin. I haven’t seen him act before, so that’ll be an interesting one as I don’t know how he’ll be, but he looks like Aladdin, so that’s a plus. Ending with the casting of Jasmine, we have Naomi Scott. She acted in Lemonade Mouth and Terra Nova, where I liked her okay-ish. Her latest big role was as the Pink Power Ranger in the 2017 remake. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this one, as I’m not blown away by her skills, but I’m willing to give her a chance.

As we’re just getting casting news and other little snippets here and there, we can’t expect the movie within the year. I do look forward to seeing the trailer and the first pictures, just to get a feel of how this movie will turn out. I’m especially excited to see how they will portray Genie and how Naomi and Mena look in their costumes. A story to be continued…

First Teaser for Mother

To say that I’m excited to see the latest movie by Darren Aronofsky, is an understatement. After Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, he put himself on the map as one of the most edgy directors out there and one who likes to push the limits of cinema and of his public. His choice to work with Jennifer Lawrence and to put her across Javier Bardem and Michelle Pfeiffer, shows his skills and with this crazy teaser, you can be sure he’s going to go all out and push his actors to his limits.

The teaser focusses on Jennifer Lawrence, but gives us flashes of what we can expect. With the sounds and the quotes in the background we get a first look on what the story will be about. And with a lot of screaming and flashing images, you can be sure that this movie will be crazy. August 8th we will have the full trailer. Keep an eye out for my trailer review in one of my next posts.

First look at Domino (Deadpool 2)

Give it to Ryan Reynolds to give us an awesome first look at Domino from the upcoming Deadpool movie. You can see the picture on his Twitter.

News_20

Off course the tweet itself is hilarious, as is always the case with Ryan Reynolds/Deadpool. Honestly, they can’t be kept apart anymore. Ryan Reynolds is deadpool. So it’s so fun when he releases such snippets. And I mean, look at her! She’s gorgeous. Her hair is wild. She looks fierce, and on top of it all and she seems like she doesn’t care. It’s going to be amazing to see her opposite Deadpool. I can’t wait.

New Trailer Reviews (#11)

Wind River

Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen reunite

This seems like an amazing thriller, where you’ll be sitting at the edge of your seat for the entire movie. Putting this movie in sdsd, they have the opportunity to use the harsh living conditions and the surrounding nature, to increase the tension and the action. From the different reviews showed in the trailer and the different I’ve read online, this seems a thriller like none other and one that is truly special. Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen have this connection on screen that will surely help the movie and the story develop. This is one that I’m asap going to put on my ‘to watch’-list.

Professor Marston & the Wonder Women

The story behind the comics

First we get the Origin story of Wonder Woman (and the first solo female superhero movie), and now we get a behind the scenes look at the lives of the her writer. And it’s an unconventional one. There has always been rumors and different facts that have been circulating about Mr. Marston and his polyamorous relationship with his wife and a former student. Both had a huge impact on the creation of Wonder Woman and on her feminist background. Another really interesting movie and one I definitely want to watch. The entire story is just so interesting to me and I hope to get a glimpse in how Wonder Woman was created.

Only the Brave

Story of Survival & Friendship

At first glance, when the trailer starts, I had the feeling that this would be yet another thriller, survival, disaster movie, but while the trailer continues, the story shifts. They focus on the story of these guys, this band of brothers you can say, who want to help, who train, who get through so much, each for their own reasons, but at the end of the day, to survive, to help and to save their town and their loved ones. Pulling the story more towards the human stories and their backgrounds, away from the pure disaster movie, it makes it so much more interesting. Definitely a must-watch for me.

The Shape of Water

The newest from Guillermo Del Toro

This seems like such an interesting story like none I have seen before. And such a story in the hands of Guillermo Del Toro, always gives us a really beautiful, yet gripping, sometimes frightening movie. It has his specific style through and through. And from the beauty of the images and the combination with the music from Alexandre Desplat, you can be sure that it will enthrall and mesmerize you. This is another movie I have been eagerly waiting for and I can’t wait until it drops in cinemas.

The Snowman

The Snowman is coming for you

What is it with movies with crazy psychopath killers. This is the second on in this list. Here we get one that is obsessed with the snow and calls himself The Snowman. Now, it does seem a little bit different and I’m quite looking forward to see how Michael Fassbender will be in this movie, but I’m not quite sure I’m going to see this one in cinemas. I’ll probably pick it up when it’s in stores to see it at home.

What do you think? Are any of these films on your watchlist? And which ones will you be seeing in cinemas?

SDCC 2017 – News & Trailers

Pacific Rim: Uprising (Teaser Trailer)

And rise we will

I’m so ashamed to admit that I haven’t seen Pacific Rim by Guillermo Del Toro, really. It’s definitely on my ‘to watch’-list, but with the abundance of films that come out each year, it always get pushed back and back and I never get around to it. I might have to change this now. Just because of this teaser. It looks great. It doesn’t give anything away from the story, nothing really. But the images look great. The appeal is definitely there. And with John Boyega (a bit more serious than we’re used) and apparently Scott Eastwood attached as well, this movie can’t be anything but great. If the story isn’t there, at least the images will look great and it will be a true spectacle. I can’t wait.

Wonder Woman #2 has been confirmed

Oh, she’ll be back

News_01It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody that, after the huge success Wonder Woman had at the box office, WB decided to make a sequel of it. It still hasn’t met all expectations, but her run isn’t over yet and I’m sure she’ll even surpass the sum Batman v Superman made. DC and Warner Bros finally found their way and it would be a total waste if they didn’t go further with this character. This news was nearly drowned under all the other amazing clips, trailers and news that was released at Comic Con, but for me it is an important one, so I wanted to add it in right here.

Justice League – Trailer

All In

This looks epic. After watching this trailer I’m left behind with jitters all over my body. The different action sequences look insane. The interactions between the characters are so interesting and funny. I’m a huge fan of Aquaman and The Flash, so I’m so happy to see they get their fair share of screentime and we get the first scenes underwater as well. I just hope they don’t go to dark with the story, but that they keep it a bit lighter that we’re used from DC. To be continued.

Ready Player One – Trailer

Finally we got images

This is another story, movie, event I’m hugely looking forward to. This seems amazing. I haven’t had the chance to read this book yet, but a lot of my friends have and they absolutely love it. When I heard Steven Spielberg would direct, my excitement for this movie rose and I have been eagerly waiting for a few snippets here and there. Off course they would release this trailer on Comic Con and I absolutely love it. I do get a bit of a Tron-vibe, but that is maybe because I don’t really know the story. I can’t wait to see this one and I’m sure it’s going to be an epic adventure.

Thor: Ragnarok – Trailer

The latest by our favourite God

I still have the feeling that I’m looking at a trailer for the next Guardians of the Galaxy. The way they use the music, the way they get a group of misfits together to overthrow a goddess in this case and save the world. I’ve been there and seen that. The only thing that does differ is the world their one. And Cate Blanchett looks just epic as Hela. Can’t wait to see her in all her forms and use her magic. I’m still very excited for this one, because Thor will forever hold a special place in my heart, but I do hope they didn’t lose too much of what him Thor.

Off course there has been so much more that has been released at Comic Con, but these are the ones that I am most excited about. What news or trailers were you excited to see or read about? What did I overlook? Let me know in the comments below and let’s discuss.

New Trailer Reviews (#10)

Geostorm

The weather goes crazy

I don’t really know what sort of vibe I have to get from this trailer. The music gives the trailer and the movie a more fun vibe, a bit like Guardians of the Galaxy. But the story in itself is more serious, with a lot of action, destruction and terrible, terrible weather. The premise is interesting and there are a lot of different directions they can take us in. But I don’t really know what direction they want to go to from this trailer. I hope the second trailer will give us a better direction, but for now this is one my watchlist. But I will see this one at home when I don’t have anything else to see.

The Wall

Mesmerizing Thriller

This seems like such a great movie. If you lose the promotional sentences throughout the trailer, you get an intense story about two comrades in arms divided by a wall, trying to survive a sniper that just wants to chat. This seems like such an action-packed movie, with so many thrills and one that will keep my on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait to see where this story takes us and if the last movies of Doug Liman can be any indication at all (Edge of Tomorrow and Mr & Mrs. Smith), this movie will be beautifully shot and the action will be on point. A must-watch for me.

Darkest Hour

Churchill gets another film

This is another movie about Churchill and World War II. What I find interesting about this one is that they seem to not shy away from the darker side of Churchill. Is this the truth? Probably not, and we will never really know how he was during that time or what he was thinking. But what we do know is that he was a difficult man to live and work with. So this movie will be an interesting point of view and I’m especially looking forward to see how they will show this difficult relationship of Churchill with his wife, his secretaries, the outside world, the politicians. A must-watch for me.

A Wrinkle in Time

The latest from Disney

I do not know the original material on which this movie is based and I do feel that this will put me in a disadvantage. This movie, this story looks big and if you don’t know the backstory, I think you might lose the essence of the story. I hope that Disney learned from Tomorrowland and that they will make this story accessible to anyone, even those you haven’t read the book, not really simplifying it, but making it understandable to everyone. For the rest, I do think the trailer looks good. It promises to be a story full of magic, colour and an overwhelmingly big and well known cast. Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Zach Galifianakis… are all in this movie. I’m a bit hesitant, but I think I’ll have to see this one in cinemas, just to be able to see all the colours and the action and the magic fully… I’m excited to see the full trailer.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Behind The Scenes)

Star Wars VIII has wrapped

I know this isn’t a real trailer and we don’t see a lot about the story, but the few images we get to see, have gotten me so excited for this movie. There will be a lot of action, lightsaber fights, new creatures, new characters and the story will apparently, if we can believe the interview bits, take us into new grounds and give us a new sense of Star Wars. It’s a sequel, but feels like a standalone. I’m so excited and I can’t wait to see the real full trailer to see where they will take us next.

Blade Runner 2049

The Sequel that no-one saw coming

We finally get a glimpse of the story in this full trailer. And this is the trailer I have been waiting for. Blade Runner being one of my number one favourite Sci-Fi film, I hold it near to my heart so I’m anxiously waiting for this film. I already know, I’ll either love it or hate it. And it all depends on the story. Here we see Officer K (Ryan Gosling) looking for Rick (Harisson Ford) because he found something that might change the world and he needs Rick to help him… understand? To testify? The exact reason we don’t know, but I do think the teaser we got from the story is an interesting one. But the images look great as ever and the music was here so well incorporated, it got me excited for the actual soundtrack.

What do you think? Are any of these films on your watchlist? And which ones will you be seeing in cinemas?

Movie Review – Dunkirk

Dunkirk_067Nolan did it again

Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada, and France are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.’ (IMDb) (106 min., by Christopher Nolan)

I got the opportunity to see this movie before it came out thanks to my work and Canvas Selects and I wanted to share my feelings of this movie right here as soon as possible. Needless to say I loved it. It was simply a masterpiece of cinema.

Dunkirk_02

The entire movie you’re enthralled by the images and the sounds that surround you and takes you to this particular moment in history. It was filmed in Imax and Nolan also wanted it to be seen like this and I do believe it gave an extra dimension to the movie. As with his other movies, this one is filled with little details that may be a bit overlooked if you see the movie at home. In Imax you can see the movie in its entire glory.

Dunkirk_08

Nolan takes us to one of the most well-known part of the second World War, where more than 400.000 men were trapped between the ocean and the incoming German forces. Basically, waiting like sitting ducks for transportation back home. For more than a week the soldiers were waiting, finding a way home and trying not to be killed by German airplanes in the meanwhile. With the forces at home not willing to put in a lot of effort, preferring to keep their boats and planes for the oncoming battles, the generals and soldiers were always looking for a way to get home, to get away from the planes. In the end, it came onto a few planes and a lot of fisher- and pleasure boats to get their soldiers back to Great-Britain. It was a massive undertaking, and the soldiers were helped by a lot of civilians.

Dunkirk_11

The story is told from three perspectives with three different duration times. The Air on the one hand, where we follow a few planes during 1 hour. One of the fisher boats that we follow for 1 day. And off course we follow 3 soldiers finding themselves together on the beach. We follow them for 1 week. These stories are not told chronologically, but rather are mashed together, building up the tension and giving us a sense of urgency that the soldiers must have felt at the time.

Dunkirk_14

The way the story is told is not really standard, but it doesn’t take you away from the story at all. Rather it takes you and pulls you even more into the story, as you meet characters in one storyline further in time and then see them come back in another storyline but earlier in time. (Are you still following?) Knowing how he turns out and what this specific character goes through and then seeing him still hopeful at the beginning of the week in another storyline, shows us how impactful this specific event was to the mindset of a lot of soldiers and how gruesome this was.

Dunkirk_04

But the movie isn’t all about the story. There isn’t really one main character that you follow the entire movie. But rather a few characters we follow in each story line. You could argue that Tommy (played marvelously by Fionn Whitehead) is the main character because we follow him the most, but the story is carried by all the characters, giving us all different glimpses into this event. We have several characters all going through something different and all trying to survive. Because this is a story about survival, about getting away. There isn’t a lot of fighting. The entire movie is based upon these soldiers being stranded and finding a way of the beach, being bombarded, never knowing when the next boat will come and if they will be able to get on it. It’s a study of how far a person will go to survive and what it’ll take to get out there. It’s more of an emotional and movie piece, than an action or war movie.

Dunkirk_13

What is most remarkable about this movie is that there isn’t that much dialogue at all. This being a war movie with a lot, and I repeat a lot of explosions, the emotions here are all in the little details on the faces of the actors, on their actions. Here we have to applaud everybody, all the actors because they are all so strong in their own way. They toned down their acting and it felt so much more real for it. Fionn Whitehead (Tommy) acts so subtly as one of the soldiers we follow on the ground. Trying to survive, but never forgetting who is and always trying to help others. Aneurin Barnard and Harry Styles (yes, the one and only) are remarkable as his companions. These three stick together to survive even though they are all from different battalions.

Dunkirk_10

Mark Rylance plays Mr. Dawson who takes matters and his boat in own hands, not wanting the Navy to take it away. He sets off with his son Peter (Tom Glynn-Carney) and George (Barry Keoghan), a boy from their village, to go to Dunkirk to pick up soldiers. This trio of men have such a good chemistry, never faltering even when they see the carnage ahead. But they keep it real. They are afraid and it is life changing, but they show it in such a way that is just remarkable and show the strength of the characters and the actors themselves.

Dunkirk_03

In the air we have Tom Hardy, one of Nolan’s favourite actors, putting up a great piece of acting. Here he plays Farrier, one of the pilots charged with going to Dunkirk to protect the soldiers from German planes coming to bombard them. We mostly only see his eyes, but they give so much of his emotions that you only need one flicker of his eyelashes to know how he feels. As he was restricted to his plane and could only act in a closed-of space, it’s just remarkable how much emotion he can bring over. The same thing can be said of Jack Lowden, playing Collins, his colleague in the air.

Dunkirk_06

Needless to say that Christopher Nolan is a crack in picking the right actors for the right part and giving them enough direction, yet freedom as well, to give their best performance. By choosing to work with a lot of young (inexperienced) actors and more seasoned actors in the ‘supporting’ roles, Christopher Nolan is at his best.

Dunkirk_05

Reuniting with his favourite DOP, Hoyte Van Hoytema, he brings us a beautiful movie. Filmed in Imax, for the first time also in handheld, the movie is a pearl to be seen. Never have I seen so much detail, so much colour. Never have I had the feeling of really being in the action. It took my breath away. The story, the characters were supported by the images and here you see why Christopher Nolan and Hoyte always work together. Because they click. Because it works. The action scenes, at sea or in the air, are so craftily filmed that you feel like you’re right there with them. The way the use colour to give an aura of doom or relief is just so well done. I could go on and on about this and about the beauty of this film.

Photographer: Anders Rosqvist, www.rosqvist.photo

And the music. Hans Zimmer is also at his best here. With a ticking clock every time something bad is going to happen. With the music drowning out, the sounds drowning out, you feel that something is coming up. This paired with a little flicker of emotion on the faces of one of the actor, and your stomach will be turning because you know it’s bad. Whatever is coming, it’s bad. The music, the images and the story are so well incorporated, so well tuned in on one another. It’s just an entire sensation from begin to end.

Dunkirk_09

This movie is a true spectacle and one you must watch in Imax if you can, just to be able to see all the details, all the little emotions, to truly feel the movie. Because it’s a sensation. From beginning to end, you sit on the front edge of your seat and Christopher Nolan takes you by the hand and leads you towards 1h40 min. of pure suspense, action and despair, 1h40 of pure emotion. While you might feel a bit lost in the story at the beginning, it soon all clicks in place and you will see a movie like none you ever saw before. If one can call a movie someone’s masterpiece, then this is definitely the case right here. Christopher Nolan has outdone himself.

9.5/10 stars.  Definitely go see it, you will be blown away!

Movie & TV News (#4)

Three of the latest news fresh out of Movieland I’m most excited about

Stranger Things

News_03This is another series that just got a new release date and a new poster! I haven’t had the chance to watch this one yet. I know, I know… no excuses, but I just didn’t want to get up in all the hype. The trailer got me really excited, but with everyone loving and praising it, I wanted to wait a little bit until the storm settled before watching it, so I would be able to give my honest review of it. But it’s definitely on my watchlist this summer.

Now this poster has got me even more excited. The sky seems crazy with all the red and with the four kids standing and watching it turn and twist, a feeling of impending doom settles over you. The craziness is far from over if we can believe this poster. I can’t wait to watch this series and then continue directly with the second season. I still have a few months before October 27th is here.

Quentin Tarantino has a new project in the works

News_04Now this is a director that I can see tackling this project. If you know anything about the Manson Murders, then you know it was quite a shock in the entire movie world. With the death of Sharon Tate, the wife of Roman Polanski, and four other persons, this is a gruesome story and one that will impact Polanski in a big way.

We will have to wait to see what Tarantino will do with this story, but if he goes the same route as he did with Inglorious Bastards, we can expect a crazy film with the story loosely based on real events but with his signature style. I’m interested.

Outlander Season 3

News_01We finally have a release date for the new season on Starz. This is one of my favourites series of all times. I’m obsessed with Scotland and have been for years, blame it all on Braveheart (aka. my favourite film of all times). Whenever I hear bagpipes I lose myself in a sort of trance, so you don’t even want to know how I excited I get whenever the title song of Outlander comes on.

After a shocking first season and a second season full of twists and turns and heartbreak, I am totally ready for a more action-packed third season where hopefully we get some more scenes between Jamie and Claire. The first season was packed with cute and steamy scenes between these two and in the second season we see them apart as well. I hope the third season will be able to put them back together. Because these two together is just chemistry.

The use of history with the magical element and a love story that spans several centuries is just so interesting. The production design on this entire series is out of this world and the actors are subtle, but so strong in their rendition of these characters. I seriously can’t wait for september 10th.

What do you think? Which of these three news are you most excited about? Let me know in the comments below.

Series Review – Legion

Legion_06Oh My Fu***ing God.

David Haller is a troubled young man diagnosed as schizophrenic, but after a strange encounter, he discovers special powers that will change his life forever.’ (IMDb) (8 ep. of apx. 1h)

This is Awesome. Yes, Awesome with capital A. I was so surprised by this series and I honestly to god do not know how I feel after finishing it. Each episode is crazier then the one before. I won’t really do an episode-by-episode review, but the main review will be mostly about the first 4 chapters/episodes.

May contain small spoilers

Legion_11

The first episode starts with a short montage where we see David grow from a baby and where we see the first moments his power escapes him. It’s interesting to see, because the way it was filmed and edited gives us a small preview of how the series will be. It will be fucked up, full of colours and will give us an inside look of how his brain works.

Legion_07

The entire episode is a mix between the real world, where it’s made clear to us it’s real, and the inside of David his brain, with quickier editing, full of colours (red and others) and flashes of light. It’s crazy, it’s colourful, it’s bright, it’s flashy and it’s so, so good. Next to the fantastic cinematography and the crazy editing, we also have some amazing actors.

Legion_09

Dan Stevens, who we all know and love from Downton Abbey, gets all the attention here. He’s marvelous. He’s crazy, but human. You immediately feel sorry for him and you immediately feel with him. Here Dan gets full freedom to showcase his incredible acting skills. The important thing here is that he’s supported by other amazing characters. Next to David’s craziness, it’s the realness of the side characters that made this a real treat and really interesting. Here I want to give a big round of applause to Aubrey Plaza who gave a beautiful, yet crazy rendition of Lenny Busker, David’s best friend in the hospital. She grounds the story and makes him a bit more human.

Legion_02

While I will try to not give any spoilers here, or at least try to, I still want to give a quick note about the second episode. Here we get to the mutant base, where David gets to know his real powers. He’s told repeatedly that he’s not crazy, but just super powerful. He needs to control it, because he’s the key. To what? Nobody knows. They tell him the key to winning the war but also to something else. We get a lot of questions, that aren’t all answered in this season.

Legion_01

In the third episode we get even more questions. Who is Division 3? What do they want from David? What does Dr. Melanie Bird want from David? The dynamic here between David and Syd remains the same. We see Syd being a more reasonable voice in the craziness of David’s life and actions. She’s there to pull him back and to keep him from making rash decisions.

Legion_03

Something else I loved in this series are Ptonomy’s powers. Going back to ones memories and seeing them again is just so interesting. Here we get to know a bit more about David’s history and what he went through. But it gets crazier. Syd implored them to take her with them in his memories because she believes she can help, and what they get to see is mindblowing. In the crazy-sense of the word.

Legion_05

They see his nightmares, things he was afraid of when he was little and the more he sees these things, the more he gets out of control and the more his powers control those of Ptonomy and kicks them out. After sedating David to a point where his powers can’t affect them anymore, they go back in and there shit hits the fan. I’m not going into details here, because you have to see it to experience it fully, but this is an excellent piece of montage and lighting, giving us a sense of how his mind works and how crazy it all is in there.

Legion_08

The entire series is an introduction to the characters, to the world and to the story they want to tell. You have to get used to the way they want to tell the story, but once you get used to it, it’s a rollercoaster of craziness. I liked it a lot, because it showcases the talents of the editors, but showcases the craziness that is this world and this story as well.

Legion_10

It’s definitely a must-watch and I can’t wait until the second season to see where they will take this story. I hope they go even further and keep those crazy revelations coming. This entire season had twists and turns in every episode and it’s so binge worthy that I already told all my friends to watch it.

8/10 stars.
