Movie & TV News (#4)

Three of the latest news fresh out of Movieland I’m most excited about

Stranger Things

News_03This is another series that just got a new release date and a new poster! I haven’t had the chance to watch this one yet. I know, I know… no excuses, but I just didn’t want to get up in all the hype. The trailer got me really excited, but with everyone loving and praising it, I wanted to wait a little bit until the storm settled before watching it, so I would be able to give my honest review of it. But it’s definitely on my watchlist this summer.

Now this poster has got me even more excited. The sky seems crazy with all the red and with the four kids standing and watching it turn and twist, a feeling of impending doom settles over you. The craziness is far from over if we can believe this poster. I can’t wait to watch this series and then continue directly with the second season. I still have a few months before October 27th is here.

Quentin Tarantino has a new project in the works

News_04Now this is a director that I can see tackling this project. If you know anything about the Manson Murders, then you know it was quite a shock in the entire movie world. With the death of Sharon Tate, the wife of Roman Polanski, and four other persons, this is a gruesome story and one that will impact Polanski in a big way.

We will have to wait to see what Tarantino will do with this story, but if he goes the same route as he did with Inglorious Bastards, we can expect a crazy film with the story loosely based on real events but with his signature style. I’m interested.

Outlander Season 3

News_01We finally have a release date for the new season on Starz. This is one of my favourites series of all times. I’m obsessed with Scotland and have been for years, blame it all on Braveheart (aka. my favourite film of all times). Whenever I hear bagpipes I lose myself in a sort of trance, so you don’t even want to know how I excited I get whenever the title song of Outlander comes on.

After a shocking first season and a second season full of twists and turns and heartbreak, I am totally ready for a more action-packed third season where hopefully we get some more scenes between Jamie and Claire. The first season was packed with cute and steamy scenes between these two and in the second season we see them apart as well. I hope the third season will be able to put them back together. Because these two together is just chemistry.

The use of history with the magical element and a love story that spans several centuries is just so interesting. The production design on this entire series is out of this world and the actors are subtle, but so strong in their rendition of these characters. I seriously can’t wait for september 10th.

What do you think? Which of these three news are you most excited about? Let me know in the comments below.

New Trailer Reviews (#9)

The Greatest Showman

A musical about the start of Showbizz

This original take on the start of showbizz has some great actors and actresses linked to it. We off course have Hugh Jackmann, who already showed us one of his strength is in musicals. Zac Efron is going back to the genre after High School Musical. We see Zendaya taking on a more mature role than we’re used from her and even Rebecca Ferguson and Michelle Williams are joining the party. From this trailer I have the feeling this will be a perfect blend of music, cinematography, colours and light. They didn’t give us a clear view on the storyline, except on the start of the show, but I do think this will be one to watch.

A Bad Moms Christmas

The bad moms are back

And they’re tackling the most fun holiday of them all: Christmas. The original was one of my favourites movies of the past year, just because it was so funny and the perfect movie to go see with my friends. Now we’re getting an entire new movie in an entire other setting and period. Christmas is going to get dirty and bad and I love it.They can do so much fun things with this holiday and these characters and I can’t wait to see what they get up to next.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Jumanji is back

And yet again we have a remake. Ok, it’s not really a remake, but you know what I mean. The last year filmmakers and studios have been delving back in their archives to see what other stories they could bring back to life in a ‘newer’ look. Here it is time for Jumanji. The original was one of my favourite childhood movies, one I always watched when I was at my grandmother’s home, so it does have a special meaning for me. The first thing they changed is the game itself: it’s not a board game anymore, but it’s now a videogame. I don’t think this was an important change, but it does go with the way they want the story to unfold. The fact they change into another body, is an interesting change and will give a lot of opportunities for jokes and other events. I’m not entirely sure I will watch this one in cinemas, but it is one I want to watch at some point.

Death Note

American take on a Manga

If only this will come out ok. I’m so afraid of what they’ll do with this story. I’m a huge fan of the Manga and I’ve been devouring them. These are the kind of books you just can’t put down. With twists and turns at each turning of a page, you keep wanting more and I desperately want to know how it ends. With this movie, Netflix takes a chance and even though they already told that they took a lot of creative freedom, by putting the name ‘Death Note’ on it, you can’t but leave the fans with a certain expectation. Putting the white washing aside, I do hope that they keep to the core of the story and that it’ll be the most faithful adaptation as possibly can, storywise at least. I’ll have to see, but I’ll only watch it if I read all the Volumes. I do not want to be spoiled by this Netflix movie.

Breathe

“I don’t just want to survive, I want to truly live”

Andy Serkis brings us a tale of love, true strength and endurance set in a time not that far away. We follow the story of Robin who falls ill with Polio and starts losing all ability to walk and breathe. He finds strength in the love of his wife and sets on a marvellous adventure to find a way to live, truly live and not just survive. This seems like such a beautiful drama set at the beginning of this century. I like movies that are set in the not so distant past and that tell us stories of remarkable human beings that are not always put forward. This is also the first movie directed by Andy Serkis so I can’t wait to see how he tackles an entire movie. He previously directed some scenes in the Hobbit trilogy and these were already breathtakingly gorgeous, so I can’t wait to see his full creative vision in play. This will definitely be one I will check in cinemas.

Marvel’s Inhumans (ABC Tv Series)

Marvels takes over another network

This show seems a little strange. I honestly don’t know anything about this comic and the story and I didn’t get a lot of information from the trailer either. There is one who can’t speak of won’t speak because his power is connected to it. Iwan Rheon is back playing the bad guy. And there are a lot of other characters that come to earth and then problems arise and that is the only thing I got from this. The special effects do look incredible and that would be the only reason I would check this out. That and Iwan Rheon playing a bad guy again. I’m not sure about this one.

What do you think? Are any of these films on your watchlist? And which ones will you be seeing in cinemas?

New Trailer Reviews (#8)

Thank You for Your Service

PTSD, War movie & Miles Teller

I’m not entirely sure about this trailer. On the hand I’m really excited, because we have Miles Teller in this movie, and if you have seen Whiplash you know how great an actor he is. He can handle difficult stories and characters like a pro. But the story to me is one I feel like I’ve already seen before. I’m not entirely sure where they want to go with the story and how they’re going to go about it. If they’re going to focus more on the story from the moment he’s back or if we’re going to see him first in the middle of war. I am going to see this one in cinemas, just because I think war movies come over better on a bigger screen and the story still sparks enough interest in me.

Game of Thrones Season 7

Winter is Here

This trailer looks amazing. It gives us a sense of what is going to happen and it seems as if we’re going to get a lot more battle and gruesome scenes. With the voiceover I also get the feeling that some of our favourite characters, who have always been apart, will maybe meet for the first time. I can’t wait to see how Daenarys will get to Westeros and how John Snow will try to rally everybody behind the cause to battle the White Walkers. So exciting! July 16th can’t be here soon enough.

To the Bone

Difficult gets movie on Netflix

It’s no secret that Lilly Collins herself battled with anorexia, so her telling this story is cathartic in a way for her, but gives it an entire extra dimension for us. From the trailer, I get the feeling that it will be a hard film to watch, but one that will try to show us a better way, a way to survive. To show us, who haven’t come into contact with this disease, that this a serious disease, but one that can be overcome, how difficult it may be. That with believing in each other and supporting each other, you can overcome everything. I can’t wait until it comes out on Netflix to watch it and see how it turned out.

Pitch Perfect 3

Pitchers Are Back

The Bellas are out of college and they’re trying to find their way into the world. The entire concept seems so great and this entire film seems funny. I especially like their outfits and the new songs they’re putting on. You can definitely see that they’re putting everything out there with this one. The entire production seems bigger and better than the last one, with stunts, and bigger stages, fireworks… Definitely one I’ll be checking out in cinemas.

Stronger

A story of strength

Get your tissues ready, because this movie will break your heart and put it all back together. I already got goosebumps just after watching this trailer. Jake Gyllenhaal has already shown us in so many films that he can easily carry a hard story and convince us of his strength. Tatiana Maslany is one of my favourite actresses out there, so I’m so excited to see what she’ll bring to this story. I just can’t wait to see the film and to see how his story evolves. I don’t really know much about it, so it’ll be nice to hear about it for the first time and to really see a story of true inner strength.

What do you think? Are any of these films on your watchlist? And which ones will you be seeing in cinemas?

New Trailer Reviews (#5)

Star Trek: Discovery (Netflix)

Netflix gives Star Trek a go

It’s quite interesting to see the different movie franchises taking the step to the small screen. And here we even get a franchise that started on the small screen, jumped to the big screen and is now leaping back to small screen. And with Netflix it’ll come even to our phone screens. I’m actually excited about this one. It seems great and the production design seems out of this world. I just hope it doesn’t go the way the current Marvel stories are evolving into. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how it’ll go.

From the Land of the Moon

Marion Cotillard at her best

This movie looks so great. It gives me the feeling of a beautiful European art film. Marion Cotillard is great and is back to what she can do best: deep and dramatic roles. This film will probably rip my heart out, throw it on the ground and stomp all over it. It’s been a long time since seeing such a film that got me really excited, with an interesting story and cast. So I’ll definitely check this one out on the big screen.

Paddington 2

Yes, he’s back

When it was first announced they were making a second Paddington, I was a bit hesitant. I loved the first one so much and I didn’t want them to screw it up. But now after seeing this first teaser I’m actually really excited. Paddington is really sweet and I do have the feeling the family is even more involved in this story. I can’t wait to see what they all get up to and what the story will be all about.

Rough Night

Euhm… What?

This just seems so wrong. It looks like one of those films again. I think they want to make another movie with strong women, to empower us, but I don’t think they are hitting their mark. It seems pushed. It seems strained. This is a perfect movie to watch with my friends on a slow saturday night, but not on the big screen.

Logan Lucky

Steven Soderbergh is here to wauw us again

With a cast of Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum, Seth MacFarlane, Adam Driver and Riley Keough, this movie can’t be anything but great. And especially with Steven Soderbergh in the director seat and with this amazing trailer, this is a movie I’ll definitely see in cinema’s. It looks crazy and so much fun and I… Can’t… Wait… 😀

Victoria and Abdul

The queen and her friend invite us

This movie and the story, the story that is known by everyone, this will be a great one. This will touch everybody. This certainly will touch me. And with Dame Judi Dench, you know the acting will be on point. I don’t even want to tell more about it, because this is certainly one I will watch. And the sooner it gets out, the better.

What do you think? Are any of these films on your watchlist? And which ones will you be seeing in cinemas?

Series Review – 13 Reasons Why

13_01

Follows teenager Clay Jensen, in his quest to uncover the story behind his classmate and crush, Hannah, and her decision to end her life.’ (IMDb) (Netflix, 13 episodes of ap. 1h)

This struck too close to home. It struck close, and hard, and deep. Especially the truth it portrayed gave my chivers but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

I already feel this will be a short review. I’m not going to go into details and I don’t want to do a recap by episode, as I sometimes do with other series. But I did want to talk about my thoughts and feelings watching this series. So, it won’t be a full review either. Not now, not just yet.

13_02

It didn’t go easily. I stopped watching after the first one and then again after the third one. Just because it struck so close to home and I saw things happening that I knew friends or myself went through. It was hard. They don’t shy away from the truth. They choose to express it fully and wholly. To let everybody see what impact someone’s actions can have on one person. For that I will be forever grateful. And I will promote this series to friends and family and strangers. So everybody knows it or at least has heard of it, and so that they may (maybe) understand what some individuals go through.

13_08

This theme is hard. That is the truth. Teenagers can be assholes. Teenagers can be cruel. And when you’re also a teenager, finding your way in your new body, your new life, then hearing and seeing and going through such things, hit much harder. You’re just not in that place yet where you can dismiss it or give it the right place. Not yet.

13_03

So yes, this series struck close to home. I cried my eyes out and I felt things I haven’t felt in a long time. But it also felt like a closure for me. Being older and thinking back, I finally can close some of the chapters in my life that were still seeping through in my current life, that were still controlling me. I can finally give it a place.

13_07

After episode 4 or 5 I watched almost all of it in one setting. On the one side, I needed it to be over, on the other I was eagerly awaiting the moment Clay got to his tape. (I cried all over here) He broke my heart all over again, realizing what he did or didn’t do. Just a beautiful moment.

This entire series is carried by the actors. They are all fabulous and bring over the emotions without overacting, without pushing it too hard. They are real teenagers and you can easily place yourself in their place. I now understand when Selena Gomez (producer on this series) told that they waited to tell the story until they found their perfect cast. And they succeeded.

13_04

The last episode hit the hardest. They show everything. Everything. And it wasn’t easy to watch it. It wasn’t at all. But it is the truth. And everybody should know it. Because it isn’t easy and it never will be and it can never become easy.

I talked about it with a friend who also watched it, realizing as well it hit too close to home and got through it. Both of us agreed that this is the best way to show it. It is much more important to open a discussion about it, letting everybody know it is ok to think it once in awhile, and most importantly that there are people to talk to. And I’ve always been open about it, letting people know I understand and I want to be there to help others through it.

13_05

I especially hate all the commotion that came around it: that Netflix didn’t put enough information around the series about places people can go too if they need help. That this isn’t a series for young people. That it is too hard. They do have a point. But I think it’s way more important to be open and honest, especially with teenagers, and talk about it. Not hiding it, because then it gets worse. Trust me, I grew up in a household were talking about real, hard emotions wasn’t possible. Where the perception others had of us as a family, was more important. I’ll say no more about this, but please talk about this. Don’t shove it away. This is too important.

What do you think about this entire topic? Did you watch it? Let me know in the comments… And please be respectful and share the love around… This world is too beautiful to ruin it with poison.

9/10 stars… yes, a very high score… Both for its performances and quality, and for the message it gives to teenager. There’s already a second season in the pipeline and I can’t wait to see what they’ll do with this one.

Series Review – Girlboss

Girlboss_01Sophia, a misfit, discovers a passion for fashion, becoming an unlikely businesswoman in the process. As her business grows, however, she has to learn to cope with life as her own boss.’ (IMDb) (on Netflix, 13 ep. of approx. 26-30 min.)

This series just wasn’t for me. I’m all for a strong story where a female lead makes it from the ground up, but the important part here is that we actually like the character as well and this is where it got stuck for me.

I hate Sophia. I do admire her for her hard work and for the guts she has to make all her dreams happen. I could use some of that fierceness in my life. But overall she was a bitch. She didn’t care at all for the people around her. She didn’t care for the people she trampled on getting to where she needed to go. And although it got a little bit better towards the end, it didn’t seem genuine at all.

Girlboss_03

There was a story arc throughout this first season: her finding her way, her shop, her ebay and then her site. But every episode centered on something in her life, which made me lose interest after the third episode and then again after the ninth. Why there specifically? I don’t know. Because I think I had it with the way they told the story. I would have prefered to see a bigger arc over the episodes rather than a lot of little ones each episode.

Girlboss_02

I think it’s unfortunate if you have a good story, but the main character is just not relatable at all. The thing that happened at the end in her relationship, just didn’t stir anything within me. I wasn’t pissed of or feeling anything for her. I was just not caring about Sophia at all. I liked the side characters much more. I enjoyed the times Annie (her best friend) or Gail (another Vintage Clothes seller on ebay, her rival) where on screen, but that was it.

Girlboss_05

I get the feeling that although Netflix gives more and more money to make series and movies, and they do give a lot of creative control to the directors, there is a slight decrease in quality. I hope this won’t rub off on some of the more famous series (OITNB for example).

5/10 stars. If there comes a second series, I won’t be watching.

New Trailer Reviews (#3)

Tulip Fever

Tulip, Art and The Netherlands…

Being from Belgium, I’ve known a little bit about the history of the Netherlands and their beautiful flowers, the Tulips. Here, this movie will give us a combination of what they’re known for the best: Tulip and art. Now, this story does remind me a little bit of ‘The Girl With The Pearl Earring’, working with a similar story (painter falls in love with his subject). But with Alicia Vikander and Dane DeHaan, I can’t expect anything but greatness. These are highly talented actors and I can’t wait to see what they bring to the story.

Colossal

Anne Hathaway is a kickass Monster

Now this one seems interesting. Anne Hathaway gets her chance here to put her comedic talent to use in an action movie. It seems an interesting story, another twist to a genre overly present on screens nowadays. It seems dark and funny and I can’t wait to see what turn this story will take. I hope it doesn’t take itself too seriously or too funny, but that they easily find the perfect combination. This is a must-see for me.

The Defenders (Netflix)

Netflix Latest Marvel Story

I’m just not convinced. I’m not… You can say what you want, but they don’t seem an interesting match to me. The fun thing about the Avengers is that they are all so different and their differences make their combination interesting. Daredevil, Jessica Jonas, Luke Cage and the Iron Fist are all broody, dark people and I’m afraid they will all be mushed together. I’m just not sure about this one.

The Dark Tower

Another Stephen King Adaptation

Sometimes I get the feeling they don’t know what to film anymore. They keep picking up other stories that already have known success. This one seems  rather interesting, but I’m a bit scared that the trailer looks too good to be true. Knowing Stephen King and his Fantasy stories, there will be a lot of background and story you’ll have to know before understanding the entire world and I’m afraid the movie won’t be long enough to be explained logically. Either it will only be explaining the world to set everything up for the next film (if there is one). Or it will be more action and we’ll be guessing how the world works. I’ll definitely check this one out, but I’m not entirely sure whether I’ll see it in cinemas or at home. One thing I am excited about seeing is Matthew McConaghey as a bad guy. That must be so interesting.

Dunkirk

Christopher Nolan tackles a War story

This is one of my more anticipated movies of all time! Okay, of 2017. I mean Christopher Nolan who tackles the story of Dunkirk, what could go wrong. This can’t be any more than perfection. I can’t wait to see how he brings this story to life and if you look at the cast (except of Harry Styles, I mean, Euhm what the hell?) this movie will be brought to life by some amazing actors. I just… I can’t put my thoughts and emotions on paper, because I’m so excited! I’ll definitely check this one out in cinemas.

What do you think? Are any of these films on your watchlist? And which ones will you be seeing in cinemas?
